Valņu iela 4/6 is located in Rīga oldtown an UNESCO world heritage site. Our challenge was to incorporate a robust program within the constraints of the existing site. The existing five-story building and the historic facade was in tragic condition and could not be structurally consolidated. A decision was taken by the Client to demolish the building.
There was no interest in reconstructing a masonry plaster rendered copy of the former building. Our proposal interprets the historic information to create a “staged memory” of the previous building facade with new materials; limestone, steel and glass partially revealing a seven-floor program beyond. The new facade salutes the past and skillfully reveals a solution that respectfully departs from its original historic constraint and context.
