This apartment complex is located in the heart of Riga oldtown at the site of a Soviet-era public bathhouse. The abandoned building once intruded and degraded the local context. Our Client decided to have this derelict building removed to make way for apartments, ground floor retail space common to oldtown neighbourhoods and underground parking.
The challenge was to introduce a new apartment complex into an existing historic urban condition rich in historical information. After analyzing the site and urban condition including: extensive historic research, archaeology and required design competition our team partnered in creating a solution which response to evident urban complexities, scale and contemporary architectural language that successfully delivers the Client’s prescribed program creating a solution that served as a ‘pilot-project’ for further development in the area.
